Getting Started: Self Assessment

This Self Assessment is presented in three sections, each related to a different aspect of teaching online. Use this Self Assessment to help identify your needs for course preparation. There are a total of 22 questions.

The results of this assessment will be reported both to you and to DCE staff, but will be kept confidential. The results will not be used to evaluate your course or become a part of your teaching record, but rather, to help you accurately gauge your own professional development needs and allow DCE staff to offer tailored assistance to you.

Part 1: Prior Knowledge

Part 1 of this assessment will help to gauge your level of comfort with the technological demands of teaching online. Select the answer which is most true for you. There are 10 questions.

 

1. What is your general teaching experience?

a. I am a new instructor.
b. I have been teaching for more than 3 years.
c. I have been teaching for more than 10 years.

2. What is your online teaching experience?

a. I have taught in face-to-face settings, but not online.
b. I have have taught a web-enhanced course before (students meet face-to-face but some activities or course materials provided online).

3. How would you describe your comfort level with computer technology?

a. I am not very comfortable using a computer and try to avoid using them when an alternative is available.

Part 2: Planning & Curriculum

Part 2 of this assessment will help to gauge the compatibility of your teaching style and the challenges of teaching online. Select the answer which is most true for you. There are 7 questions.

12. Which most accurately describes your approach to planning for instruction?

a. I tend to respond to the "here and now" class needs in order to capitalize on spontaneous events for instruction. My plans are not usually written on paper but I have a solid idea of my goals for the course.
b. My lesson plans are based on the interests and curiosities of the students. I develop a syllabus and lesson plans with input from the students. Curriculum guides, texts, and materials are used as resources for a constantly changing program rather than as the program itself.
c. My lesson planning follows prescribed curriculum guides or text chapters, which are translated into a written outline of specific weekly or daily plans. Any variation in activity is thought out in detail and schedule changes are rarely made.

13. What is the usual relationship between learning objectives and your approach to course planning?

a. I have a solid idea of what I want students to get out of the course, but rarely publish these goals and like to be spontaneous and flexible as I teach each course session.
b. I write general learning objectives for the overall course, but not for each specific planned portion of the course content.
c. I write learning objectives for each planned portion of my course content and publicize these for students.

14. Which best describes your approach to assessment?

a. I like to give an exam at the end of each major section of course content.

a. I expect students to work as individuals.
