Description: 
This course is a study of the development of reading skills in K-12 education. We will explore the conceptual ideas underlying the teaching of reading in the content areas, the importance of reading skills to students' undestanding of specific subject matter content, and the reading strategies for the three phases of cognitive processing (preactive, interactive, reflective). We will focus on the application and integration of reading skill strategies into the existing K-12 curricula.
Objectives: 
By the end of this course, the successful learner will:
  • Understand and describe the authors' rational for teaching reading in the content areas, the three interactive elements of the reading process that influence comprehension, the five premises that are basic to the teaching of reading in the content areas, the six assumptions about learning, and the Richard and Morgan framework for strategic teaching (PAR).
  • Evaluate a textbook, currently used in an actual class, acoording to the "Text Features" section of the course test and identify grade/age appropriate instructional strategies for teaching students about textbook organizational methods.
  • Explain and evaluate the metacomprehension process and identify questions to promote metacomprehension that are grade/subject/age appropriate for students.
  • Create a reflective discussion to help students interpret and understand a specific text assignment.
  • Self-evaluate his/her own planning for strategic teaching, select two reading strategies, apply the strategies in a classroom, and describe/evaluate the process and results.
