Description: This course is an in-depth study of developmental strategies and techniques that will promote critical thinking, problem analysis, self/peer evaluation and a thorough understanding of key cognitive developmental changes and concepts in middle childhood and early adolescence. Assessment techniques that promote understanding and critical thinking will also be presented. Application of course concepts, techniques and strategies with middle level students will be required.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course the participants will:

Understand the cognitive developmental changes in middle school-age
children and the implications for teaching/learning.

Know and appreciate the difference between student
knowing and understanding.

Understand and be able to apply the theoretical,
fundamentals, and internal structure of critical thinking as applied
to early adolescence.

Understand the six types of thinking (Six Hat Thinking)
and be able to teach middle school children to apply the six types
to discussions and problem solving.

To understand and be able to apply the use of visual
tools for constructing knowledge.
- To demonstrate the ability to promote critical thinking activities
for middle school children.
