Description: 
A study of the assumptions, historical events, family and human devlopmental principles that form the foundation for the middle level education philosophy. Focus is on implications for organization, management, teaching, content and interaction within the middle level school. Practical application of course concepts in a school setting where middle level philosophy has been implemented is required.
Objectives: 
Upon completion of this course the participants will:
  • appreciate the differences between middle level education and traditional junior high schools, i. e., middle school features are guidance, transition/articulation, block time schedule/interdisciplinary teams, appropriate teaching strategies, exploratory and appropriate core curriculum/learning skills.
  • identify and understand the significance of interdisciplinary teaming, collaborative planning, cooperative student group work, parent involvement, a range of organizational strategies, and a balanced curriculum based on unique needs of early adolescents.
  • know the specific developmental characteristics of the middle level child and how the family impacts this age group's social and educational experiences.
  • comprehend the historical roots of middle level education.
  • demonstrate application of information from the first four objectives to the professional practice of working in the middle level educational setting.
